Overview
Description
The BLDC/PMSM GaN-based motor drive power stage system is available in a variety of architectures to fit different end-application use cases and system-level requirements:
- 3.3kW Isolated Motor Drive System: Drives voltages up to 400V and power ratings up to 3.3kW. Ideal for high-power applications such as HVAC systems, heat pumps, and other high-end products that require a fully isolated solution.
- 1kW Non-Isolated Motor Drive System: Drives voltages up to 100V and power ratings up to 1kW. Ideal for space-constrained applications requiring a smaller bill of materials (BOM) and compact form factors, such as UAVs and drones.
The power stage integrates an inverter, isolated gate drivers, sensing, protection, and auxiliary power functions, while motor control algorithms and pulse-width modulation (PWM) generation are executed on an external motor control processor board.
The inverter stage implements SuperGaN® FETs in a three-phase bridge topology, with each switch driven by an isolated gate driver that provides galvanic isolation between the control and power domains. Current measurements, phase-voltage monitoring, temperature feedback, position sensors, Hall sensors, and other diagnostic signals are transferred through isolation amplifiers to the processing board, enabling comprehensive system protection and monitoring.
System Benefits:
- GaN-based inverter stage enables high-efficiency operation and evaluation at higher switching frequencies.
- Fast fault response with overcurrent and short-circuit protection is implemented through a dedicated hardware protection path independent of MCU processing.
- Enables direct reuse of the existing motor control software environment and supports future migration to Renesas motor control platforms.
