As smart home appliances and industrial systems become increasingly connected and feature-rich, the systems that drive them require high power efficiency and reliable operation at optimized costs. This is where the highly sustainable Renesas 16-bit MCUs play a very important role in these design priorities.

As smart home and industrial applications become more capable, functions such as sensor monitoring, environmental control, and user interface management demand reliable, responsive operation. Designers must also minimize power consumption, control system costs, and support long product lifecycles. These requirements make 16-bit MCUs a critical foundation for delivering the right balance of performance, efficiency, and value.

Renesas continues to lead the 16-bit MCU market* with a track record of delivering the right performance, efficiency, and cost. This scale of adoption reinforces a practical design principle that the most effective MCU is not necessarily the most powerful, but the one that best balances functionality, power, cost, and long-term reliability.

Two RL78 MCU Groups Engineered for System Control and Touch Capabilities

As appliance and industrial requirements evolve, Renesas is committed to delivering cost-effective system control solutions that address emerging design challenges. The RL78/G21 group delivers excellent ultra-low power consumption and features a high-accuracy HOCO with ±1% accuracy guaranteed across the full operating range of 1.6V to 5.5V and -40°C to +105°C, together with integrated data flash. These features help reduce external components, simplify system design, and optimize overall system cost.

Beyond system control, the additions to the RL78/G23 group have expanded touch-channel capabilities to support more sophisticated HMI applications. In addition to touch capabilities, the RL78/G23 range is equipped with SNOOZE Mode Sequencer (SMS) and Logic & Event Link Controller (ELCL) for quick system wake-up and improved power efficiency. These MCUs are also equipped with a high-accuracy, high-speed on-chip oscillator (HOCO) and integrated data flash to reduce external components to build more compact boards.

Developers can easily scale across the broad lineup within RL78/G21 and RL78/G23, and across the different RL78 MCU groups, depending on application needs. Pin compatibility enables users with existing RL78/G13 designs to migrate easily to the latest RL78/G21 group and take advantage of reusable software development.

In addition, Renesas is expanding Product Longevity Program (PLP) coverage across all RL78/G21 and RL78/G23 package options to support long-term product availability. This makes both MCU groups well suited for home appliance and industrial applications that require long product lifecycles and stable supply.

Key Differences Between RL78/G21 and RL78/G23

While both MCU groups share the RL78 family’s low-power benefits and common development ecosystem, each is designed to address different application requirements and design priorities. The following table helps developers identify the MCU that best meets their application's functional and cost requirements.

Start Evaluation Quickly and Easily

Renesas provides evaluation hardware and software tools that help accelerate development and shorten the path from concept to prototype. Developers can purchase the Fast Prototyping Board (FPB-RL78G21) and download the Smart Configurator to embark on the evaluation of RL78/G21 for system control.

To evaluate the touch capabilities, purchase either the Fast Prototyping Board (FPB-RL78G23) or the Capacitive Touch Renesas Starter Kit (RSSK-RL78G23), and work with the Smart Configurator and QE for Capacitive Touch to start seeing the touch capabilities that you can add to your designs.

In addition, Renesas provides sample code through its GitHub repositories, allowing developers to quickly evaluate devices and reuse proven software resources. The RL78/G21 temperature sensor demonstration video shows how to monitor temperature data in real time while following a basic application development workflow using the evaluation board and development tools.

The 16-bit MCUs remain an important solution for many appliances and industrial systems. The latest RL78/G21 group delivers an optimized solution for low-power system control, while the expanded RL78/G23 group lineup provides greater flexibility for applications that require both system control and advanced HMI functionality.

Renesas continues to invest in the evolution of the RL78 family, expanding its portfolio to meet the changing demands of smart appliance and industrial applications. With its combination of efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness, the RL78 family provides a scalable platform for both current and future designs.
