Overview
Description
As power grids transition from hardwired infrastructure to IEC 61850-based digital smart grids, highly reliable communication networks have become essential. Network communication failures can increase the risk of outages and service disruptions. High-Availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR) and Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) provide zero-recovery-time network redundancy, ensuring seamless communication even during a network fault.
The HSR/PRP Redundancy network for IEC 61850 delivers zero recovery time (seamless) and zero packet loss during network failures in substation automation systems. Its intelligent electronic device (IED) controller pairs dual-port HSR/PRP interfaces with hardware-based IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) synchronization and works on either the process bus or station bus. The architecture supports flexible deployment across multiple substation network topologies without a single point of failure. It combines control, an isolated power supply, a precision analog front end for CT/VT signal acquisition, and protection I/O interfaces for substation IEDs, such as merging units and protection relays.
System Benefits:
- Enables zero-packet-loss, zero-recovery-time communication through HSR/PRP, meeting the high-reliability and low-latency requirements of IEC 62439-3 substation automation networks.
- Provides hardware-integrated PTP time synchronization for precise time stamping of sampled values (SV) across multiple IEDs, enabling accurate protection and measurement functions in accordance with IEC 61850-9-2.
- Supports flexible deployment on both the process bus (typically HSR ring topology) and station bus (typically PRP dual-LAN topology) using the same MPU platform, reducing hardware variants and simplifying product development.
