Industrial Power Delivery

Renesas offers a complete portfolio of high-performance power solutions for industrial applications. These applications include but are not limited to factory automation, industrial communication, lighting and control, home/building automation, smart meters, smart appliances, telecom, and cloud. Due to the increased utilization of connectivity, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the overall emphasis on sustainability, Renesas power products offer many features that are ideally suited to these applications in mind. These features include a wide input voltage range from less than 1V DC to 480VAC, wide frequency operation, low EMI, low quiescent current, low switching and conduction loss, all in small but often in thermally enhanced packages.

Renesas power products are ideally suited to deliver power for microprocessors, controllers, DSPs, and FPGAs, along with many auxiliary power rails for timing, memory, motor drive, connectivity modules, audio, and much more. The products include ACDC products that can provide isolation while dropping the voltage to a lower voltage such as 48V, 24V, or 12V depending on the industrial application. After this voltage is generated then a complete portfolio of DCDC (buck, boost, and buck-boost) monolithic regulators, controllers, FET drivers, and fully integrated power modules with input voltage ranging from less than 2V to above 120V to deliver power from <1W to nearly 1kW.

In order to make choosing Renesas power products easy, there are multiple hardware designs to evaluate the product in a working industrial solution. There are evaluation board kits (EVB kits) that are typically available for every product. In addition, Renesas offers many full-power solution hardware designs referred to as Winning Combinations. These can be found under specific industrial applications, and a sample of these are listed below. Whether the need is for standard linear regulators, highly flexible DC/DC converters, or fully integrated power modules, Renesas products are tailored to meet a wide range of industrial applications.

Low-dropout regulators are valued for simplicity and cost, but in modern noise-sensitive, power-hungry systems, their role extends far beyond basic voltage regulation. This paper examines the key performance parameters of LDOs and their impact on delivering clean output voltage to the various devices inside an electronic system. We’ll also discuss the factors a designer must consider in order to optimize a system, especially in noise sensitive and higher current usage areas.

The buck (step-down) converter is a popular switching regulator topology, typically featuring a built-in controller and integrated FETs. While commonly used for step-down power conversion, buck regulators can also support inverting, bipolar, and isolated power supplies with single or multiple rails. This paper explores various buck designs, their operating principles, and practical considerations for implementation.

Synchronous buck regulators are widely used to convert 12V rails to low-voltage supplies for processors, memory, and I/O. Protecting these regulators from overcurrent conditions is critical to system reliability. This white paper reviews popular overcurrent protection methods, including cycle-by-cycle limiting, hiccup-mode, and latch-off mode. It provides implementation guidance and practical insights to help power supply designers select the most effective protection strategy for their applications.
