A year ago, Renesas introduced a bold new concept, Renesas 365, Powered by Altium, for uniting the disaggregated processes that are fracturing modern embedded systems design. The vision for our cloud-connected development platform was clear then, even as it was still taking shape. As engineers move from concept to product implementation, they need a better way to organize, streamline, contextualize, and integrate workflows across a diversity of hardware, software, productivity tools, and design teams. During a recent press conference at embedded world in Nuremberg, Germany, we celebrated that vision with an important milestone. The first phase of Renesas 365 is now available.

An Embedded Design Accelerant

This achievement matters because the problems we set out to solve have only grown more urgent. The complexity of embedded design is intensifying as products become more software-dependent, more connected, and more reliant on fast, informed decisions earlier in the design cycle. Yet too many engineers still rely on disconnected tools, detached files, and manual component selection. This creates isolated "design islands" that consume valuable time without adding much value.

Renesas 365 was built to challenge the status quo with an intelligent, cloud-based design environment that houses device exploration, model-based system development, and early concept validation in one place.

When we introduced the concept of Renesas 365, we described it as a way to bridge silicon and system development. That remains true. The first availability phase includes more than 550 devices from the Renesas RA microcontroller family, which are integrated with the Renesas e² studio integrated development environment (IDE) and the Renesas RA Flexible Software Package (FSP), in addition to software development kits and the broader Renesas toolchain. With this level of access, engineers can move quickly from concept through device selection and into early implementation while staying connected to the tools and workflows they already know.

Confidence Through Continuity and System-Level Awareness

In addition to channeling data collection and decision making through a single interface, the Renesas 365 platform is model-based and context-aware. What does that look like?

In a traditional workflow, engineers spend hours reviewing datasheets, checking pin multiplexing, comparing peripherals, and verifying timing and power constraints. They do this in an effort to determine which MCU will meet the needs of their system, often without any assurance that the selected MCU will interoperate as expected in a real-world implementation. It is necessary work but repetitive and slow.

Renesas 365 changes that experience. Instead of forcing engineers to evaluate components in isolation, the platform recommends suitable MCUs based on system-level intent. It looks not only at a device in the abstract, but at how it aligns with the design requirements governing interfaces, peripherals, timing, resource use, and other system building blocks. What used to take hours of manual review now gives engineers a more informed starting point in just a few minutes.

This is an important distinction, because Renesas 365 is meant to augment, not replace, incumbent desktop design tools. Existing RA customers, for example, can link current Renesas e² studio projects to the platform and begin using it immediately. Engineers trained on Altium Designer for PCB creation can still use the tool for authoring board designs. What Renesas 365 adds is continuity at the system level. Engineers can confidently carry forward the decisions they make during ideation and component selection into design implementation without recreating, rediscovering, or losing vital data.

Continuity is one of the powerful ideas behind the Renesas 365 platform. Many hardware, software, and system development environments today consist of teams working in parallel but independently, meaning that changes by one team may not come to light until late in the review cycle. Such belated discoveries add time and cost that can erode customer trust and time-to-market advantages.

Renesas 365 maintains a digital thread across all design domains. By retaining a contextual awareness of how different design decisions relate to one another, the platform tracks each iteration to identify conflicts before they impact the downstream workflow.

Expanding Support for After-Market Updates and Lifecycle Management

General availability also means the platform is beginning to extend beyond early exploration. One of the notable capabilities introduced in this phase is integrated over-the-air device (OTA) management for RA-based systems. That is significant because it reflects a broader shift in how products are designed and maintained. Today's smart, connected products need updates, security management, and lifecycle support in the field. By incorporating OTA and fleet management into the platform, Renesas 365 begins to connect design decisions with operational reality well after deployment.

A Pivotal Milestone in Realizing Renesas' Digitalization Vision

The availability of Renesas 365 also reinforces the significance of Renesas' strategic acquisition of Altium. Renesas 365 brings together Altium's strength in software and cloud-based hardware design and collaboration with Renesas' strength in silicon, embedded software, and application expertise. The result is not just another tool. It's a platform that spans early ideation, hardware-software co-design, device selection, and lifecycle management with increasing system awareness across each stage. With this milestone achieved, Renesas is another step closer toward realizing our Digitalization Vision: To make electronics design accessible to a broader market to allow more innovation by creating an Electronics System Design & Lifecycle Management Platform together with Altium.

This is also what differentiates Renesas 365 from other offerings in the design ecosystem. Some tools go deep in a specific domain, such as PCB design, simulation, or part discovery. Renesas 365 is designed to connect decisions across those domains. It is open by design, built to support third-party components and mixed-vendor architectures, because real-world system development rarely happens inside a single closed environment.

Guiding Development with Early AI Assistance

Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a focused role within the Renesas 365 platform. At design time, AI works in the background to translate system intent into practical starting points, recommending appropriate devices, configurations, and connections based on modeled requirements. Information-level AI then surfaces relevant documentation and software examples as needed, reducing manual research. Beyond design assistance, Renesas 365 will support application-side AI in the future, enabling customers to build AI models that define how products behave in the field, such as predictive maintenance or adaptive control. This accelerates development without compromising system reliability.

First Launch Sets the Course for Continuous Improvement

The general availability of Renesas 365 is just the beginning. Today, the platform starts with RA MCUs, but the roadmap extends across the Renesas MCU and MPU portfolio and into richer subsystem support, additional device families, and broader ecosystem participation. That's the long-term promise of Renesas 365. Our goal is to create an intelligent development environment that helps engineers spend less time on friction and more time on innovation.

A year ago, Renesas 365 represented a new way of thinking about semiconductor and embedded systems design. Today, it's a live platform available at no charge. That is an important step forward, not only for Renesas, but for an industry that has been searching for a more connected design experience.
