Building scalable, production-ready edge computing solutions is rarely straightforward. Engineering teams often face significant development complexity, pressure to reach the market faster, and rising costs across the life of a product. In our previous blog, "Renesas and Canonical to Drive Innovation in Scalable Edge Computing with RZ MPUs", we introduced our collaboration with Canonical and shared our vision of simplifying the development of scalable, production-ready edge computing solutions. By combining the broad Renesas RZ MPU portfolio with the Canonical Ubuntu ecosystem, we are helping OEMs and ODMs reduce development complexity, accelerate time-to-market, and lower total cost of ownership.

As our collaboration has evolved from a shared vision into practical solutions available to developers today, certified Ubuntu 24.04 LTS images are now available for selected Renesas RZ platforms, supporting Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, and Ubuntu Core deployment models. At the same time, developers can begin exploring AI snap-based workflows for Renesas vision AI applications, including Dynamically Reconfigurable Processor for AI (DRP-AI) accelerated use cases. Looking ahead, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS introduces the latest Linux and desktop innovations that help shape the next generation of intelligent edge solutions built on Renesas RZ platforms.

A Production-Ready Ubuntu Foundation for the Edge

The availability of certified Ubuntu 24.04 LTS images for the Renesas RZ MPUs marks an important milestone for industrial and embedded system developers. More than a Linux port, a certified Ubuntu image provides a production-ready, long-term supported platform with Canonical certification, enabling access to key platform features that include Arm® Mali™ GPU acceleration, multimedia codec support, MIPI camera, and security integration. This allows developers to focus on application development rather than board bring-up and driver maintenance.

Ubuntu Desktop: Start Building Immediately

Development moves faster when engineers start in an environment they already know. Ubuntu Desktop gives developers a familiar graphical environment backed by Ubuntu’s extensive open-source ecosystem for evaluation, software development, HMI creation, multimedia applications, and rapid prototyping. Developers can build and validate applications quickly, without a learning curve slowing the first prototype.

Ubuntu Server: Bring Existing Linux Software to Production Hardware

Most teams don’t want to rewrite software they already trust. Ubuntu Server is a flexible and widely adopted Linux platform for gateways, industrial equipment, networking devices, and embedded applications. Existing Linux software can be reused and integrated quickly while leveraging Ubuntu’s rich package ecosystem. The result is less porting effort and a shorter path from working prototype to deployable product.

Ubuntu Core: Protect Security-Sensitive Assets

Products that stay in the field for years need security built in from the start. Ubuntu Core delivers an immutable operating system designed for IoT and long-life connected products. Features such as secure boot, full disk encryption, transactional updates, and snap-based application isolation make it particularly attractive for security-sensitive industrial deployments. Together, these protect devices at boot, at rest, and through every update, giving security-sensitive industrial deployments a platform they can trust over the full product lifecycle.

Vision AI Development with DRP-AI and AI Snap

Another major step forward is the introduction of AI snap-based workflows for Renesas vision AI platforms. Canonical currently provides an Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS image and the AI Snap Tutorial for the Renesas RZ/V series, enabling developers to evaluate AI applications on Ubuntu while leveraging Renesas DRP-AI acceleration.

However, the value of AI snap extends well beyond a single device. AI snap represents a modern Ubuntu-native software packaging and deployment framework for AI applications, with a common approach to packaging, distributing, updating, and managing AI workloads. while taking advantage of the Ubuntu software ecosystem. The current implementation is available on RZ/V2H, RZ/V2N, and RZ/V2L, but the broader vision is to let developers apply the same software deployment concepts across Renesas vision AI platforms throughout the RZ/V family. By combining Ubuntu, snap technology, and Renesas AI software, developers can simplify the process of evaluating and deploying vision AI applications.

Efficient Vision AI Processing with DRP-AI

As edge AI deployment continues to accelerate, more processing must occur directly on devices rather than in the cloud. To address this need, the Renesas DRP-AI accelerator not only performs neural-network inference but also image pre-processing and post-processing in dedicated hardware. This helps reduce CPU and GPU load while enabling efficient edge AI processing with excellent power efficiency and predictable real-time performance, enabling powerful vision AI capabilities in power-constrained embedded systems.

Combined with Ubuntu, DRP-AI provides developers with a powerful platform that combines hardware acceleration with access to one of the world’s largest open-source software ecosystems.

Reusing Existing Investments

One of the biggest concerns when moving to a new software environment is protecting existing development investments. The Ubuntu AI snap environment is designed to help developers reuse Renesas SDK examples, application frameworks, and AI software assets within standard Ubuntu development and deployment workflows. Rather than rebuilding applications from scratch, teams can leverage existing investments while benefiting from Ubuntu-native packaging and distribution mechanisms.

The development journey may include:

  • Starting with an Ubuntu-based development environment
  • Learning through AI snap tutorials
  • Reusing Renesas SDK assets
  • Evaluating DRP-AI accelerated AI workloads
  • Preparing applications for deployment

This workflow helps shorten the path from proof-of-concept to production-ready products.

Expanding Ubuntu Coverage Across the RZ/N and RZ/T Portfolio

The collaboration between Renesas and Canonical continues to expand beyond vision AI platforms. Ubuntu Early Access images are now available for the RZ/N2H industrial networking MPU and the RZ/T2H real-time industrial control MPU. These early access releases provide developers with an opportunity to start evaluating the Ubuntu environment, establishing a foundation for broader industrial use cases as additional platform-specific capabilities are progressively introduced.

By extending Ubuntu availability across a broader range of RZ MPU families, Renesas and Canonical are laying the foundation for a common software platform that can support diverse industrial and edge AI workloads, while simplifying development and maintenance across product lines. Further industrial networking and platform-specific enablement is planned as part of the continued expansion of Ubuntu support across the Renesas RZ portfolio.

Security and Long-Term Maintenance

For industrial and infrastructure products, security is now as important as performance. Ubuntu LTS provides five years of standard support, while Ubuntu Pro can extend security maintenance for up to fifteen years. Customers also gain access to continuous Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) remediation and enterprise-grade support services.

This long-term security maintenance model aligns particularly well with industrial devices that frequently remain in service for a decade or longer. It also supports regulatory requirements such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which emphasizes secure software maintenance and vulnerability management throughout a product's lifecycle. Renesas and Canonical identified security and compliance as key pillars of ongoing collaboration from the outset.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and the Next Generation of Intelligent Edge Systems

While Ubuntu 24.04 LTS provides the currently available production-ready foundation, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS offers a glimpse into the future direction of the Ubuntu platform.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS introduces major enhancements, including:

  • GNOME 50
  • Enhanced HDR support
  • Improved Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
  • Better Fractional Scaling
  • Improved Snap integration
  • Modern developer tools
  • Sysprof installed by default
  • New generation applications such as Papers, Loupe, Ptyxis, Resources, and Showtime

These enhancements help improve both the developer experience and the customer experience for future edge systems. In particular, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS continues to strengthen support for modern AI and container-centric development workflows, while delivering a more responsive desktop experience.

Future Ubuntu 26.04 LTS enablement for individual Renesas RZ products depends on product-specific validation, board support package (BSP) readiness, multimedia support, accelerator enablement, and commercialization plans. Nevertheless, the continued evolution of the Ubuntu ecosystem creates exciting possibilities for future generations of Renesas-powered edge products.

Building a Broader Edge AI Ecosystem

The collaboration between Renesas and Canonical goes way beyond just operating system support. By bringing Ubuntu, AI snap, and the power-efficient AI acceleration of DRP-AI together, developers get a single software foundation that carries them from concept to deployment without starting over at each stage. With a roadmap extending toward Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and beyond, Renesas RZ MPUs are an ideal platform for the next generation of intelligent edge systems.
