Description

This reference design introduces a home appliance panel UI demo based on the RL78/G22 and its capacitive touch sensing unit (CTSU2La), designed to evaluate low-power capacitive touch interfaces. The demo uses the Multiple Electrode Connection (MEC) function to treat multiple touch electrodes as a single input, enabling efficient standby wake-up detection with fewer scans and reduced power consumption. By adjusting sensitivity, the same approach also supports proximity-style sensing, making it suitable for early-stage UI concept evaluation and design studies.

Features

  • Uses the RL78/G22 MCU
  • Uses the RL78/G22 CPU board included in the RSSK-RL78G22, and an electrode board that has 7 self-capacitive buttons and 25 LEDs
  • The front panel works as a touch button and touchless sensor using the same electrode
  • MEC function allows sensing of multiple electrodes by single measurement
  • Low power consumption by MEC function

AI-generated Summary: The document explains the Multiple Electrode Connection (MEC) function that treats multiple touch electrodes as a single electrode to reduce scanning time and power consumption. It demonstrates a home appliance UI with seven touch buttons, which operate independently in normal mode and combine into one electrode in standby mode using MEC. This allows waking the device from standby by touching any electrode. The document includes hardware configuration, sample software flowcharts, current consumption measurements, and design files such as schematics and BOM for the electrode board.
