The Intersil 80C286 is a static CMOS version of the NMOS 80286 microprocessor. The 80C286 is an advanced, high-performance microprocessor with specially optimized capabilities for multiple user and multi-tasking systems. The 80C286 has built-in memory protection that supports operating system and task isolation as well as program and data privacy within tasks. A 25MHz 80C286 provides up to nineteen times the throughput of a standard 5MHz 8086. The 80C286 includes memory management capabilities that map 230 (one gigabyte) of virtual address space per task into 224 bytes (16 megabytes) of physical memory.

- Application NotePDF 723 KB an121 Dec 14, 2001AI-generated Summary: The 80C286 processor outperforms the 80386SX in executing 16-bit code, largely due to its efficient handling of idle bus cycles and faster execution of most instructions. Over 78% of analyzed instructions run as fast or faster on the 80C286, including I/O, interrupt, and protected mode instructions. The 80C286 excels in real mode jumps, calls, loops, and multi-tasking operations, making it better suited for industry-standard 8086/80286 code and protected mode operating systems.
- Application NotePDF 661 KB an111 Dec 14, 2001AI-generated Summary: The 80C286 processor outperforms the 80386 in several key areas, including faster loop and I/O instructions, quicker interrupt handling, and more efficient protected mode task switching. It executes many string and segment transfer instructions faster and handles multi-tasking operations with significant clock cycle savings. Examples demonstrate up to 25% performance improvement in interrupt-driven I/O and array processing routines. While the 80386 excels in multi-bit shift/rotate and some arithmetic operations, the 80C286 generally offers superior speed in real mode and protected mode tasks.
- Application NotePDF 237 KB an120 Aug 12, 1998AI-generated Summary: The document outlines important legal disclaimers and usage guidelines for semiconductor products. It emphasizes user responsibility for product design and safety, disclaims liability for damages, and restricts unauthorized modifications or reverse engineering. It categorizes products into 'Standard' and 'High Quality' grades with specific application areas. Users must comply with laws, regulations, and safety measures, and consult Renesas for environmental and export control matters. Contact details for global sales offices are provided.
- Application NotePDF 307 KB an112 Aug 11, 1998AI-generated Summary: The document compares the 80C286 and 80386 processors focusing on their hardware operation on 16-bit and 32-bit data buses. The 80C286 supports fully pipelined 16-bit bus operations, enhancing performance with slower memory and peripherals, while the 80386 requires external logic for partial pipelining. Idle cycles disrupt pipelining on the 80386 but not on the 80C286, giving the latter a performance edge. Instruction prefetching differs: 80C286 prefetches 16-bit words in one cycle, whereas 80386 prefetches 32-bit doublewords over two cycles, potentially delaying execution. Operating the 80386 on a 32-bit bus improves pipelining and prefetching but increases system complexity, cost, EMI issues, and board space requirements.
