Proximity-Based Locationing for Peer-to-Peer Ranging
Renesas' Wireless Ranging (WiRa™) technology utilizes phase-based ranging to estimate proximity between peers - similar to channel sounding. Utilizing the phase difference between tones emitted on adjacent channels, this phase-based ranging approach can offer accurate range estimates even when its signal is attenuated; unlike RSSI (receive strength signal indication) whose range estimate is directly based on the amplitude of the received signal.
WiRa also includes advanced multipath cancellation, resilience to 2.4GHz noise and has been field deployed since 2022. Running on Renesas' Bluetooth® LE SoCs, WiRa is a function call, enabling sequential Bluetooth LE and WiRa operation. WiRa demo kits are available, today to evaluate, including our latest, reduced cost 'WiRa Gen3'.
Robust Indoor and Outdoor Ranging
Leveraging advanced multipath cancellation ISM band (2.4GHz) noise immunity algorithms, WiRa provides sub-1m accuracy in outdoor applications and is also able to hand more challenging indoor environments such as highly RF reflective steel interiors that present significant multipaths and significant signal attenuation due to high densities of object interference.
Years of Development Behind Field-Tested Locationing
Developed over multiple years, WiRa has been proven in challenging environments—such as steel-interior cruise ships—where traditional RSSI-based solutions fall short. By leveraging advanced ranging technology, WiRa significantly enhances locationing accuracy and reliability for real-world deployments.
