Overview

What are sub-GHz-band wireless solutions?

As the result of the amendment of Japan’s Radio Act, it has become possible from July 2012 to use wireless communication at 20 mW or below in the 920 MHz band as a specified low power radio station. Sub-GHz is a generic term that refers to a frequency band slightly lower than 1 GHz (1000 MHz), such as this 920 MHz band.

The sub-GHz solutions offered by Renesas comply with the Wi-SUN for ECHONET Lite Profile international wireless communication standard of the Wi-SUN Alliance for using ECHONET Lite, a communication standard for home energy management applications used by smart meters and Home Energy Management System (HEMS), for 920 MHz wireless communication. As a promoter of this standard, Renesas has also been promoting the R&D and international standardization of the Wi-SUN Alliance since its inception. Our sub-GHz solutions are widely used as “standard tools” for certification testing by the Wi-SUN Alliance.

WiSUN

Wi-SUN (Wireless Smart Utility Network) is a next-generation wireless communication standard that uses the sub-GHz band (920 MHz band in Japan). This standard features interconnection based on the IEEE802.15.4g standard for the physical layer (MAC/PHY), and it is increasingly used for communications in so-called smart houses, centering on smart meters and HEMS.

In September 2013, following Tokyo Electric Power Company, Incorporated adoption of Wi-SUN as its wireless communication system between smart meters and HEMS controllers installed inside homes, power companies throughout Japan likewise adopted this standard.

2.Software of sub-GHz wireless solutions

The communication protocol normally consists of a number of layers such as PHY layer, MAC layer, and network layer. Renesas offers layer-level APIs for each of these layers for a variety of sub-GHz wireless communications applications.

RF Driver

The RF driver is a program that controls the RF transceiver and provides a PHY layer-level API.


MAC Stack

The MAC stack offers the MAC functionality stipulated by the IEEE802.15.4-2011-and IEEE802.15.4e-2012 specifications.


IP Stack

This IP stack supports 6LoWPAN, IPv6, ICMPv6, UDP, and other IP-based functions.

Evaluation Tools

The evaluation tools are programs used for radio characterization evaluation and Radio Act compliance certification through command input from a serial terminal using the RF driver functions.
