Description

The HIP4080A/81AEVALZ evaluation board is used to demonstrate theHIP4080A andHIP4081A 80V/2.5A peak, high frequency, full bridge FET drivers with charge pump and input comparators.

The HIP4080A and HIP4081A are high frequency, medium voltage full bridge N-channel FET driver ICs, available in 20 lead plastic SOIC and DIP packages. These FET drivers switch at frequencies up to 1MHz making them well suited for driving voice coil motors, switching power amplifiers and power supplies.

The HIP4080A includes an input comparator, used to facilitate the "hysteresis" and PWM modes of operation. The HIP4081A can drive every possible switch combination except those which would cause a shoot-through condition.

Features

  • Drives N-channel FET full bridge including high-side chop capability (HIP4080A)
  • Independently drives four N-channel FETs in half bridge or full bridge configurations (HIP4081A)
  • Bootstrap supply max voltage to 95VDC
  • Drives 1000pF load at 1MHz in free air at +50 °C with rise and fall times of typically 10ns
  • User-programmable dead time
  • Charge-pump and bootstrap maintain upper bias supplies
  • DIS (Disable) pin pulls gates low
  • Input logic thresholds compatible with 5V to 15V logic levels
  • Very low power consumption
  • Undervoltage protection

AI-generated Summary: The HIP4080A features enhanced TTL input sensitivity and a propagation delay control system that balances gate turn-on timings for MOSFETs in an H-bridge. It uses level-translation circuits to manage high voltage signals up to 95VDC efficiently, minimizing power dissipation. The device includes charge pump circuits to maintain gate voltage safely below 15V. Driver circuits use high-speed bipolar transistors and MOSFETs to reduce shoot-through and power loss. Proper bias supply design, including bootstrap circuits and layout considerations, is critical for optimal performance and minimizing switching losses.

AI-generated Summary: The document details the HIP4081A high-frequency 80V H-Bridge driver, focusing on its level translation, charge pump, and driver circuits. It explains how level translation minimizes power dissipation by controlling pulse width and current. The charge pumps supply gate load current while protecting MOSFETs with voltage clamps. Driver circuits use bipolar transistors and MOSFETs to efficiently source and sink gate charge, reducing shoot-through and power loss. It also covers bias supply design, emphasizing proper voltage levels, bootstrap capacitor sizing, and layout techniques to optimize performance and reliability in high-frequency switching applications.

AI-generated Summary: The document explains the design considerations for Class-D audio amplifiers, focusing on MOSFET power dissipation, overcurrent and short circuit protection, and feedback loop stability. It details the current limit circuit, reset mechanisms, and power supply choices to optimize efficiency and reliability. The feedback loop design ensures stable gain and frequency response, while output filters remove high-frequency PWM components to reduce EMI. Component values affect amplifier performance and stability, with emphasis on matching resistors and compensating for bus voltage variations.

AI-generated Summary: The document explains the operation of a 50W, 500kHz full-bridge isolated DC-DC converter using phase-shift control and zero-voltage switching (ZVS) with the HIP4081A driver. It details the freewheel interval where switches conduct simultaneously, enabling frequency-independent control. The left and right leg transition intervals describe charge displacement on MOSFET output capacitances, essential for ZVS. Phase-shift drive logic is derived from a UC3823A PWM controller, with timing adjustments made via HIP4081A delay pins. The design addresses load-dependent ZVS timing and logic circuit implementation.
