Originally developed for automotive applications, the Controller Area Network (CAN) communication standard is now widely used in applications requiring high reliability, such as industrial equipment and elevators. Our flagship RX MCU family has been offering products with built-in CAN controllers for many years, but until now, these products were limited to the high-end RX700, RX600, and mid-range RX200 series. However, in response to customer requests for lower power consumption and cost reduction in CAN bus-connected applications, the latest RX140 product has introduced a CAN controller for the first time in the entry-level RX100 series.

The RX140 features the industry-leading real-time performance of Renesas' proprietary RXv2 core, along with exceptional power efficiency achieved through ultra-low power consumption process technology. Compared to RX200 series products with CAN controllers, the RX140 reduces both active current and standby current by approximately 50%. Additionally, the RX140 is equipped with a third-generation capacitive touch sensor, enabling the implementation of both CAN bus connectivity and capacitive touch keys on a single chip for applications such as control panels for e-Bike and elevator, thus contributing to system cost reduction.

Renesas provides the RSCAN FIT (Firmware Integration Technology) module as a free-of-charge driver for the RX140's CAN controller. It includes a sample program for the Renesas Starter Kit for RX140, which allows for functional evaluation of the RX140, enabling users to start evaluating the CAN controller immediately. Please use this solution to reduce power consumption and optimize cost in your CAN-based applications with the RX140.
