Overview

Description

The 5V49EE701 is a programmable clock generator intended for high performance data-communications, telecommunications, consumer, and networking applications. There are four internal PLLs, each individually programmable, allowing for four unique non-integer-related frequencies. The frequencies are generated from a single reference clock. The reference clock can come from one of the two redundant clock inputs. Automatic or manual switchover function allows any one of the redundant clocks to be selected during normal operation. The 5V49EE701 is in-system, programmable and can be programmed through the use of I2C interface. An internal EEPROM allows the user to save and restore the configuration of the device without having to reprogram it on power-up. Each of the four PLLs has an 7-bit reference divider and a 12-bit feedback divider. This allows the user to generate four unique non-integer-related frequencies. The PLL loop bandwidth is programmable to allow the user to tailor the PLL response to the application. For instance, the user can tune the PLL parameters to minimize jitter generation or to maximize jitter attenuation. Spread spectrum generation and/or fractional divides are allowed on two of the PLLs. There are a total of five 8-bit output dividers. Each output bank can be configured to support LVTTL, LVPECL, LVDS or HCSL logic levels. Out0 (Output 0) supports 3.3V single-ended output only. The outputs are connected to the PLLs via a switch matrix. The switch matrix allows the user to route the PLL outputs to any output bank. This feature can be used to simplify and optimize the board layout. In addition, each output's slew rate and enable/disable function is programmable.

VersaClock® 3 and LP Programmable Clock Generator Overview by IDT

Description

This video provides an overview of IDT's VersaClock® 3 and VersaClock LP product families. VersaClock programmable clock generators allow designers to save board space and cost by replacing crystals, oscillators (including programmable oscillators), and buffers with a single timing device. IDT's VersaClock product portfolio contains parts with up to four internal PLLs, each individually programmable, allowing for up to seven unique frequencies. Various subsets of the VersaClock family are targeted for different applications. For high-reliability systems, the VersaClock III family supports glitchless automatic or manual switchover function allowing the redundant clock to be selected during normal operation. For consumer systems, VersaClock III and LP (low power) provide flexibility with an internal EEPROM that makes it simple to reprogram frequencies for changing system requirements through the use of the I2C interface. Presented by Baljit Chandhoke, Product Marketing Manager at Integrated Device Technology, Inc. Hello, My name is Baljit Chandhoke and I'm Product Marketing Manager of Timing Products at IDT. Today, I'll be giving you a brief overview of IDT VersaClock III and VersaClock Low Power Programmable Clock families.

IDT VersaClock products are programmable devices that save cost, reduce board space and greatly increase flexibility in consumer communications networking applications. VersaClock devices are highly configurable and can be programmed through the use of I2C interface. These devices are ideal for designs that need multiple different clock frequencies, quick time to market, low board space and BoM cost. Using IDT's spread spectrum techniques, VersaClock products are also an inexpensive and effective way to reduce EMI for FCC certification. IDT's VersaClock family contains parts with up to four internal PLL's, each individually programmable, allowing for up to seven unique frequencies. Various subsets of VersaClock families are targeted for different applications. For low powered battery application, VersaClock LP has exceptionally low power consumption while maintaining great performance. VersaClock III will be used in high-end consumer applications, industrial applications and our system clock for communication applications.

As you see in the block diagram, there are six different crystals. All these crystals can be replaced with a single crystal and VersaClock III from IDT. The benefits of the solution are reduced board space, reduced bill of material, low cost, as well as capability to change frequencies on the fly. In addition, as you know, crystals have lower reliability, so when we reduce the number of crystals from six to one, we are increasing the overall reliability.

Key applications of VersaClock are high-end consumer, industrial, communications, instrumentation, medical and battery-powered devices. As you can see, there are numerous application issues solved by VersaClock family of products.

As you see in the block diagram, there are four internal PLL's, each individually programmable, allowing for four unique non-integer related frequencies. The frequencies are generated from a single clock reference. The reference clock can come from one of the two redundant clock inputs. Automatic or manual switch over function allows any one of the redundant clocks to be selected during normal operation. The devices are in system, programmable and can be programmed through the use of I2C interface. An internal double-eprom allows the user to save and restore the configuration of the device without having to reprogram it on power up.

As you can see, there are many benefits and features of the VersaClock III family of products which are summarized on this slide.

We have devices all the way from five outputs to nine outputs with LVCMOS output, LVPECL output, LVDS output and HCSL outputs in different packages, as shown on this table.

We also have family of devices with VCXO input, which enables you to program the output frequency depending on the voltage applied at the input.

Now, I'll talk about the VersaClock Low Power family of devices. VersaClock Low Power devices are programmable clock generators intended for low-powered, battery-operated consumer applications. There are four internal PLL's, each individually programmable allowing for up to eight different output frequencies. The frequencies are generated from a single reference clock. The reference clock can come from either a TCXO or a fundamental mode crystal. An additional 32-kilohertz crystal oscillator is available to provide a real time clock or noncritical performance mega hertz processor clock.

The key benefits and features of this family are summarized as shown on this slide.

The different device options that we offer are show on the slide with five outputs all the way up to eight outputs and 20-pin package to 28-pin package.

In summary, IDT VersaClock Programmable devices are ideal clocking solutions for a wide range of applications. They can be used to replace crystal oscillators, VCXOs, Clock IC's. They enable our customers to improve time to market, which shorten design times as well as allowing for in-system programming and system margining. VersaClock family of products save BoM cost and board space.
