The Renesas Demonstration Kit (RDK) for RX63N is an evaluation and demonstration tool for Renesas RX63N microcontrollers. The goal is to provide the user with a powerful debug and demonstration platform targeted at common applications. The board also provides a useful platform for evaluating the Renesas suite of development tools for coding and debugging, using the High-performance Embedded Workshop (HEW) IDE as well as programming the device using the on-board SEGGER J-Link JTAG debugger.
The Renesas Demonstration Kit for RX63N is also the hardware platform that is included in a special RX63N-specific edition of Micrium's book on the µC/OS-III Real Time Kernel. The book and board combo targets serious programmers and college students who need to understand and create programs based on the timesaving features of a real-time kernel. Part I of the text covers the internals of the new µC/OS-III real-time kernel. The emphasis is on the internals, features, API calls, and where and how to use an RTOS, all presented in a clear and useful way, and accompanied by a wealth of diagrams. Part II provides specific examples for using µC/OS-III on the new Renesas RX63N microcontroller.

Analog Devices offers the broadest MEMS inertial sensor portfolios in the industry, including high performance low-g accelerometers, high-g accelerometers, gyroscopes, and fully integrated Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs). ADI's MEMS portfolios now include high performance analog and digital out MEMS microphones.
On the RX63N RDK, the on-board ADI silicon microphone ADMP401 is connected to the RX63N A/D converter using an ADI SSM2167 low voltage microphone preamplifier. Analog Devices also supplied the ADXL345 3-Axis Accelerometer, the ADT7420 temperature sensor, as well as the ADM3101E RS-232 line driver.

The RX63N Renesas Demonstration Kit (RDK) Adder Board, was designed by Future Electronics' Systems Design Center (SDC), and allows design engineers to quickly develop a low cost daughter card implementing their own custom application circuit that will easily interface to the Renesas RX63N RDK.
The board has a flexible assortment of common surface mount IC footprints with all pins brought out to small vias for easy wiring. With the addition of common headers, the Adder Board plugs neatly onto the RDK allowing daughter card access to most of the RX63N's peripherals and I/O pins for use in their application.

A Micron Phase Change Memory (PCM) serial flash is provided on the RX63N RDK for user non-volatile storage. PCM memory has greater write endurance than standard serial flash. This part, NP5Q128A13ESFC0E, is 128 megabit and is accessed by the SPI Bus.

The RX63N RDK includes the Total Phase 'Beagle' debug header. The Beagle I2C/SPI Protocol Analyzer is a non-intrusive USB-based bus monitor that can capture, display, and filter I2C and SPI data as it appears on the bus. Using both the Data Center Software and Beagle analyzer, users can easily view I2C bus traffic (up to 4 MHz) and SPI bus traffic (up to 24 MHz) in real time. Additional functionality allows engineers to filter data against a wide variety of parameters, or instantly search for specific hexadecimal or ASCII data patterns during a live capture.
FreeRTOS now released fully maintained ports of their popular operating system targeting the RX architecture with specific communication stacks for the RX63N.
Having recognized the advantage of the wide compiler choice available for RX devices, three separate ports have been developed to support the Renesas, IAR Systems, and GNU toolchains. Each port includes demo applications designed to run on a number of platforms including the Renesas Starter Kit (RSK) and the Renesas Demonstration Kit (RDK). These demonstrations range from simple flashing of LEDs using a number of the operating systems key features (designed as a kick start for target application development) to a full TCP/IP web server. Best of all, these ports are available for download and use totally royalty free under a modified GPL license (FreeRTOS) or with technical support and warranty as OpenRTOS.
