Renesas Synergy™ AE-CAP1 Application Example for Capacitive Touch

The Renesas Synergy AE-CAP1 enables rapid evaluation, prototyping, development, and testing of Renesas’ world-class capacitive touch technology together with the Synergy Platform. AE-CAP1 provides multiple touch sensing printed circuit boards (PCBs), & features microcontrollers (MCUs) from the Synergy S124 and S3A7 Groups. 


AE-CAP1 features three precision-accurate extension PCBs supporting Mutual as well as Self Capacitance touch sensing for wheel, slider and button designs. In addition, two MCU PCBs featuring Synergy S124 and S3A7 MCU Groups are provided, as well as ready-to-use application projects that will give you a head start on your own touch enabled designs using the fully integrated Synergy Platform.

Tuning & optimizing touch sensing parameters as well as definition of touch areas & buttons is done graphically with the Capacitive Touch Workbench for Renesas Synergy PC application. The code generated by Capacitive Touch Workbench for Renesas Synergy is fully supported in Renesas e2 studio as well as in IAR Embedded Workbench for Synergy.

AE-CAP1 is supported by the Capacitive Touch Sensing Unit (CTSU) Application Framework, which is part of the fully-qualified Synergy Software Package (SSP).

SSP also contains additional software frameworks for wireless communication, security services, audio playback, serial communication & power management, as well as ThreadX® RTOS, FileX® FAT System, USBX™, USB protocol stacks, GUIX Studio™ for designing graphical user interfaces, and more.

Available documentation includes the complete Design Package (Schematics & design files) as well as a Design and Layout Guide to help you build world-class capacitive touch-enabled applications.


  • Two self-capacitance PCBs with:
    • 30 touch buttons and LEDs for feedback
    • 5 sensor touch sliders
    • 4 or 8 sensor touch wheels
  • One mutual-capacitance PCB with 20 mutual capacitance touch buttons and LEDs
  • Two MCU PCBs (Processor Boards) for Synergy S124 and S3A7 MCU Groups.
  • Optional power supply is included


PC System Requirements

To use Capacitive Touch Workbench for Renesas Synergy, e2 studio ISDE or IAR Embedded Workbench for Renesas Synergy, ensure that your PC meets the following minimum requirements:

  • Microsoft® Windows® 7 or Windows® 10 with Intel® Core™ family processor running at 2.0 GHz or higher (or equivalent processor)
  • At least 8 GB of system RAM
  • At Least 2 GB of free hard drive space
  • At least 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • Connection to the Internet
