As efforts to protect the environment have advanced, the use of inverters in industrial applications and green energy systems has continued to grow rapidly as a way to achieve low power motor control and reduce power conversion loss. Industrial automation equipment, such as AC servos, general purpose inverters and robot controllers, and green energy systems like solar inverters, wind inverters and battery systems, require low power consumption and higher speed communication due to the increased volume of data needed for control.
On the other hand, the noise environment is becoming more severe, as IGBTs and SIC MOSFET power devices use higher speed switching. In addition, it's necessary to meet stringent safety and size requirements. These conditions make selection of isolation devices difficult. Renesas' RV1S9x60A family of photocouplers solves this issue. The RV1S9x60A supports high speed communication up to 15Mb per second, low input drive current and high common mode noise rejection. The high temperature operation and high noise rejection of the RV1S9x60A family contributes to improving layout space savings by mounting the photocoupler in near the IGBT or MOSFET power device.
The operating power supply voltage supports the typical 3V to 5V range commonly used in industrial equipment. As RV1S9060A and RV1S9160A have a comparative tracking index or CTI equal to 400, creepage distance can be shortened with controllers, such as programmable logic controllers or PLCs. The RV1S9x60A family is available in three types of packages. The SO5 RV1S9160A is suitable for PLCs I/O RS-485 or RS-232 with a creepage distance of 4.2mm. In particular, since CTI is 400 it's possible to support 200V AC of UL61010-2-201 with the same 100V footprint pattern as conventional UL-508 in PLCs.
The LSO5 RV1S9060A can be used for communication between MCUs of 200V and 400V AC servos, and inverters and 750V DC storage batteries with a creepage distance of 8mm. Compared to general SDIP with 8mm creepage distance products, the package height is reduced by 30% and the mounting area is reduced by 25%, contributing to more efficient layout density.
