What is IEC 62443

The threat of cyber-attacks is growing. With the evolution of IoT the targets of cyber-attacks are changing from information assets to Industrial Automation and Control System (IACS). Serious damage such as operation stops and the destruction of components are occurring.

In order to deal with evolving cyber attacks, all layers that make up an IACS, such as system services and component functions, in addition to operational layer must be kept secure. For this reason the IEC 62443 series is attracting attention as the de facto cyber security standard for all layers of IACS.

As a provider of semiconductor devices for component suppliers of IACS, we place great importance on the IEC 62443-4-2 standard.

RZ/G IEC 62443-4-2 READY Solution

The attitude that device providers should take against the IEC 62443-4-2 standard is to provide products that meet the security features prescribed by it. As a provider of not only semiconductor devices but also platform software, Renesas is working to make industry secure by actively supporting suppliers so that they can certify using the IEC 62443-4-2 standard.

For this reason, we decided to provide solutions for suppliers to certify using the IEC 62443-4-2 standard with the RZ/G series. RZ/G SoCs are suitable for the IEC 62443-4-2 standard because they support the Linux platform which includes highly robust security features and is expected to be in high demand in industry going forward.

Suppliers can efficiently develop security functions which conform to the IEC 62443-4-2 standard using our hardware and software that has been validated for compatibility. Our solutions will help to minimize the development time, cost, difficulties and uncertainties of getting certification with the following features:

  • Validated platforms such as devices with comprehensive interfaces, reference board and software for Linux
  • Documents of certification evidence and development guidelines
  • Compliance testing environment for simplified self-evaluation

This solution is under development and will be available at the end of 2019.
