HIP2103/04 Half Bridge Drivers for Battery Powered Motor Drive Applications

The new HIP2103 and HIP2104 are half bridge drivers optimized for battery power motor driver applications.

Typical Applications using the HIP2103 or HIP2104

The HIP2103 and HIP2104 can also be used in many different applications including non-motor drive applications such as DC/DC power supplies, UPS and inverters, and various automotive applications.

Features & Benefits

These are the basic features as found in many half bridge drivers, but it is the additional features of the HIP2103 and HIP2104 that make these drivers unique.

The unique features are provided to optimize the performance of battery powered and high current motor drive applications. The 4V UVLO allows the motor drive to operate even with very low battery voltage ripple typically seen with lithium batteries. This low UVLO also allows the customer to choose how low they will allow the battery to discharge leaving the decision up to the controller and not with the driver. The sleep mode current minimizes battery drain when the product is not being used. The -10V transient makes the driver more immune to excessive transients on the phase mode (HS pin) that can exist when switching very high motor currents. No competitor provides all of these features in their half bridge drivers.

The HIP2104 has these additional unique features. The VDD on-board linear regulator provides 12V not only to the bridge driver section of the HIP2104 but also to other external HIP2103s. The VCC on-board linear regulator is used to provide 3.3V to an external controller. Two independent enable inputs for the VDD and VCC outputs give the customer maximum flexibility on how to use these regulators. For example, when both outputs are turned off, the total battery drain current is less than 5µA. Another feature of the enable inputs is that debouncing is provided to allow the safe use of mechanical switches to turn on and off the regulator outputs. No competitor has these embedded LDOs.

The sleep mode of the HIP2103 and HIP2104 is activated by setting both the LI and HI inputs high for more that 20µs. Internal logic prevents both bridge FETs from turning on simultaneously. This method was used to eliminate the need of an additional enable pin, keeping the HIP2103 in the lowest possible cost, 8-pin DFN package. Individual LI and HI inputs are provided instead of one single PWM input because some motor applications require both bridge FETs to be off during some portions of the operating cycle. Because of this, a PWM input is not usable for motor drives.

Both the HIP2103 and HIP2104 are provided in DFN packages. These very small footprints allow the drivers to be placed very close to the bridge FETs simplifying the PCB design. The very low Theta JC of the HIP2104 is especially important for minimizing the temperature rise due to the additional power dissipation of the linear regulators.

Typical Half Bridge Application using HIP2104

Here is a typical half bridge motor drive application using only one HIP2104. The VCC output biases the uController and the VDD output biases the driver section of the HIP2104. The only external components are decoupling capacitors, bridge FETs, and one resistor and diode. The diode is used to maintain the voltage on the VBAT pin in the presence of severe battery voltage ripple. The one external resistor is used to dampen parasitic ringing cause by the very rapid switch closure of a mechanical switch. The parasitic ringing may result with the absolute max rating of the VCen and VDen inputs being exceeded. If logic is used for the enable inputs, a resistor is not necessary.

Typical Full Bridge Motor Drive Circuit

Here is a motor driver circuit very similar to the half bridge application of the previous slide except a second half bridge is added for the full bridge topology. Notice that the HIP2103 is biased by the VDD output of the HIP2104.

Typical BLDC Motor Drive Circuit

Here is the three phase motor driver circuit for a BLDC motor. One HIP2104 is used to bias the two HIP2103s. A detailed application note and a demonstration board are available for a BLDC motor application. This demo application note covers not only details on using the HIP2103/04 but also some basic BLDC motor drive theory is provided.

Available Customer Tools

Two different customer tools are available. An evaluation board allows the customer to investigate the performance of the HIP2103 or HIP2104 with various operating conditions. An on-board MOSFET half bridge is provided and an on-board controller is used to generate the LI and HI inputs under various operating conditions. Also illustrated in the controller operation is the invocation of the sleep mode.

The BLDC demonstration board is a complete BLDC motor drive. The on-board controller is also user configurable to operate as a full or half bridge motor driver for brushed DC motors. To give the user maximum flexibility, the controller is also mounted on a daughter card. If desired, the customer can design their own daughter card to use what ever controller they desire.
