Renesas Becomes a Signatory of United Nations Global Compact

Renesas has become a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) (announced on April 21, 2021), the world’s largest voluntary initiative to implement universal sustainability principles. As a participating company, Renesas will further align its sustainability strategy with the ten UNGC principles in the four areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

Renesas Receives Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) Validation on Mid-term Targets

Renesas has received an official validation on its Scope1 and 2 targets (greenhouse gas emission reduction by 38% by 2030 from 2021 base year) from SBTi – a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) – has officially validated Renesas’ Scope1 and 2 targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions targets by 38% by 2030 from a 2021 base year (announced on August 25, 2022). This target is critical to help reduce the global warming to 1.5°C, the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement. Our commitment to having 70% of our suppliers by emissions covering Cat1, set science-based targets by 2026 (Scope3 target) was also certified by SBTi.

Renesas Participates in the Ministry of the Environment’s Water Project

Renesas joined the "Water Project" in February 2022 as part of its ongoing efforts to conserve water resources. The "Water Project" was launched by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan as a public-private partnership initiative to increase commitment to maintain or restore a healthy water cycle based on the Water Cycle Basic Law that took effect in 2014.

Through this initiative, Renesas will introduce our efforts to conserve water resources and share information about the importance of water resources and our contributions.

Renesas Supports Japan Climate Initiative’s “Call for an Ambitious 2030 Target for Japan to Realize the Paris Agreement Goal”

Renesas has become a member of the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI), a network that aims to realize a decarbonized society. Renesas also announced its support for JCI’s “Call for an Ambitious 2030 Target for Japan to Realize the Paris Agreement Goal,” which was announced by the JCI on April 19, 2021. This message by the JCI urges the government of Japan to set a climate change goal that would cut greenhouse gas emissions in Japan by at least 45 percent below 2013 levels by 2030, and to strengthen its renewable energy target to 40 to 50 percent in 2030. By supporting JCI, Renesas will establish networks with various companies and local governments, and proactively promote preventative initiatives for global warming to realize a sustainable society.

Renesas Endorses the Task Force on Climate-Related Disclosures (TCFD)

Renesas has endorsed the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and has joined the Japan-based TCFD Consortium (announced on April 15, 2021). By becoming active members of these climate-focused industry bodies, Renesas demonstrates its commitment to more transparent financial disclosures with special emphasis on managing risks and opportunities related to climate change. Based on the recommendations of the TCFD, we will proactively disclose information to stakeholders by focusing on four areas: Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, and Indicators and Goals. We will broaden our business strategy to take into account climate science and make informed decisions on how to mitigate risks and maximize opportunities.

Renesas Joins the CDP Supply Chain Program

Renesas has joined in the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) of "CDP Supply Chain Program * in 2022. By utilizing this program, which requires disclosure of environmental risks and opportunities, Renesas will strengthen our efforts to reduce CO2 emissions of our business partners in addition to our own domain. Renesas will continue to realize a sustainable supply chain and strive to reduce the environmental burden of the entire supply chain.

* CDP Supply Chain Program: A program provided by CDP that requires suppliers to disclose information on climate change, forest conservation, and securing water resources, and provides feedback on the results of their responses. It is a program that encourages continuous environmental improvement and strives to build a resilient supply chain.

Renesas Joins the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) "Responsible Mineral Procurement Study Group"

Renesas has joined "Responsible Mineral Procurement Study Group" established to realize responsible mineral procurement (April 2022). Renesas is a member of the RMI(Responsible Minerals Initiative), which promotes responsible mineral procurement worldwide. By participating in the "Responsible Minerals Procurement Study Group" in collaboration with RMI, Renesas will deepen cooperation with the industry and deal with conflict minerals issues such as the identification of refineries and refineries.

Renesas Joins the Responsible Business Alliance

Renesas has joined the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) (announced on April 19, 2021), a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 committed to supporting the rights and well-being of workers and communities worldwide affected by global supply chains. By joining the RBA, Renesas will fully support the vision and goals of the RBA to ensure that its manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible and that its workers are treated with respect and dignity.

Pledging Support for Business for Marriage Equality

Renesas’ CEO, Hidetoshi Shibata, has pledged support for Business for Marriage Equality (announced June 1, 2021), a campaign for companies to show support in requesting equality in marriage laws in Japan.

Renesas believes in the importance of respecting the individuality of each and every employee and to create innovation through proactively incorporating diverse values and ideas. In order to achieve this, Renesas proactively promotes D&I. In April 2021, Renesas revised the Human Rights policy in the company Code of Conduct. It now states that employees should not be discriminated against based on “sexual orientation” and “sexual identity”. Following the pledge of support to BME, Renesas will continue to promote initiatives to support members of the LGBTQ+ community and its allies both inside and outside of the company, as well as enriching internal policies like benefits.

Renesas has become a signatory of Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) (announced on April 13, 2021), a joint initiative founded by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and UN Women in 2010.

Becoming a signatory solidifies Renesas’ unwavering commitment to promote gender equality and create a more inclusive workforce where individuals can achieve their maximum potential regardless of gender. Going forward, we will empower and inspire women in the workplace and in society, and to create a business environment where women can work, lead and excel in their careers.

Global Semiconductor Alliance's Women's Leadership Initiative Pledge

Renesas' CEO, Hidetoshi Shibata, has signed the Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI) Pledge. This pledge signifies that industry leaders are working to make a substantial impact on recruitment, retention and advancement of women in the semiconductor industry. By signing the pledge, Renesas commits to the following:

  1. Prioritizing gender diversity and gender pay parity.
  2. Creating an inclusive culture, free from biases that enable women to contribute their maximum potential.
  3. Promoting the professional development of women through offering opportunities, training, recognition, engagement and participation.
