New PMIC Enables Up to 50 Percent Power Reduction; Supports Ultra-Thin Profiles for Upcoming Intel “Oak Trail” Platform

September 15, 2010

TOKYO, Japan, September 15, 2010 — Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, today introduced a single-chip power management IC (PMIC) optimized to support the upcoming Intel® Atom™ platform (codenamed “Oak Trail”), which is designed to bring greater energy efficiency and rich multimedia capabilities for sleek tablets and netbooks. “Oak Trail” will be the second Intel Atom processor-based platform supported by Renesas Electronics PMIC solutions.

Renesas Electronics' new µPD9977 PMIC solution offers several key benefits for designers working with the future Intel Atom platform, including:

  • A small form factor, single-chip solution to support sleek tablets and netbooks
  • Support for “Oak Trail” advanced power management features that deliver up to a 50-percent reduction in average power consumption with full HD-video playback
  • Voltage regulation optimized to deliver improved performance for high- and light-load efficiency
  • Full documentation and support collateral, including PMIC schematics and layout references, to enable rapid implementation

Leveraging these enhanced PMIC capabilities, designers of future Intel Atom processor-based devices can offer users the long battery life, portability and performance they need to stay in touch with family and friends, stay informed and be productive on the go.

“As new solutions like the ‘Oak Trail’ evolve to meet skyrocketing user demands for always-on connected mobility, advanced energy efficiency and smaller form factors will be key for broad user adoption,” said Masahiko Kashimura, Senior Manager of System Analog Group, 3rd MCU Business Division, Renesas Electronics Corporation. “Renesas Electronics' new Intel-based µPD9977 PMIC is an example of the important role of core silicon technologies in achieving longer battery life for these mobile multimedia devices. We are excited to be working closely with many leading OEM and ODMs as they develop the next generation of ultra-thin tablets and netbooks.”

Availability

Engineering samples and mass production availability of the µPD9977 PMIC is aligned with Intel milestones of the “Oak Trail” platform release, scheduled for Q1 2011.

About Renesas Electronics PMIC Technology

Renesas Electronics' PMIC solutions offer scalability for portable devices ranging from smartphones to ultra-thin tablets and netbooks. Renesas offers PMIC solutions for two Intel Atom processor-based platforms: Z6xx Series Family (formerly “Moorestown”) and “Oak Trail.” The company's Intel Atom processor-based PMIC solutions are designed into over 40 designs worldwide in a variety of form factors.

Renesas Electronics' PMIC solutions are integral in achieving the fine grain OS power management in the Intel Atom processor-based Z6xx Series Family (formerly “Moorestown”), enabling ultra-low-power states (S0i1 and S0i3) and Intel Burst Performance Technology.

Renesas Electronics has also developed proprietary tools for its PMIC solutions to help designers innovate and differentiate their product design. These intuitive tools allow engineers to quickly understand the Renesas PMIC solution, enable fast system bring-up, and shorten software development time.
