SANTA CLARA, Calif., December 2, — Renesas Electronics America Inc. today announced its manufacturing facility in Roseville has received the prestigious 2010 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger at the Governors' Global Climate Summit 3 where 13 companies and organizations were recognized for their extraordinary contributions to the state's environment and economy. Award recipients were selected for their outstanding environmental leadership by voluntarily working to conserve the state's resources, improve the environment and contribute to the economy.

Established in 1993, the GEELA program is the state's highest honor in recognizing individuals, companies and organizations that make significant contributions to California by developing environmentally friendly practices while contributing to the local economy. The 13 winners were chosen from more than 100 applicants in 10 different categories: waste reduction; sustainable practices or facilities; enhanced environmental and economic leadership; environmental and economic partnerships; comprehensive land-use planning; sustainable communities; technological and market innovation; ecosystem and watershed stewardship; children's environmental education; and climate change (http://www.calepa.ca.gov/Awards/GEELA/).

Awards are given based on strength in eight specific areas: results, transferability, environmental impact, resource conservation, economic progress, innovation and uniqueness, pollution prevention, and environmental justice. Renesas Electronics America's Roseville Diversion Program successfully diverted 89 percent of its solid waste, resulting in a cost savings of $43,605, and gained nearly $85,000 in revenue through its various recycling programs. The program's waste-reduction efforts prevented 996 metric tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere, while the water re-use project saves 15.6 million gallons of water per year with an annual savings of $72,000.

"It is a privilege for Renesas Electronics America to be honored with the GEELA award from Governor Schwarzenegger," said Gabe Kim, vice president of manufacturing operations, Renesas Electronics America. "Our employees have worked very hard to develop, implement and maintain effective environmental programs to reduce waste, which benefits our local community and has a positive impact on the environment."
