We recently talked about how Renesas’ IoT Access Protocol (IAP) is enabling truly smart buildings. Today we’ll expand a bit on the technology behind IAP and explain why it’s now a standard for control networking.

IAP is the first open and extensible web services protocol for Industrial IoT (IIoT) networks. It provides secure and open access to the most complex industrial systems, enabling companies to integrate their existing controls and automation systems with emerging AI and analytics applications. Through this integration, they can transform operations from a closed single-protocol loop to an intelligent multi-protocol system.

IAP works by providing a common information model and services that run across commercial IoT, industrial IoT, IT, and web infrastructure. It supports the installation, monitoring, and management of devices, and it uniquely enables devices to be integrated with each other and with mission-critical AI-based services. IAP’s unifying information model enables AI platforms to understand and interpret the meaning of and relationship between data types.

We believe that IAP holds the key to breaking down the silos of automation that typically exist in industrial control networks. 

IAP: The ANSI/CTA 709.10 Standard

IAP was recently approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) as ANSI/CTA 709.10, a standard for accessing industrial controls data from web services for machine learning and analytics applications.

Renesas contributed to IAP for standardization because we believe that when all the different pieces of industrial equipment made by different vendors can understand each other’s data and share it with AI platforms, we can start to build truly smart systems that can automate processes and predict outcomes. The technology is at the heart of Renesas’ SmartServer™ IoT multi-protocol IoT edge server, and as a standard, we believe that IAP will be widely adopted.

ANSI/CTA 709.10 specifies IAP as a standard web services application protocol based on MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) and REST (Representational State Transfer) over HTTP or HTTPS transport protocols. MQTT and REST are widely used today for the IoT, but they are low-level protocols with no standardization in the application data and service requests sent using the protocols. IAP delivers that standardization for control and automation networks.

The new standard includes a catalog of hundreds of device profiles that standardize behavior for a wide variety of industrial and commercial applications. Its extensive library of profiles and types was developed by industry working groups to ensure support for common commercial and industrial applications such as:

  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • Indoor and outdoor lighting
  • Security and access control
  • Energy and gas metering
  • Energy management
  • Fire and smoke control
  • Commercial and industrial I/O
  • Gas detection
  • Generators
  • Room automation
  • Renewable energy
  • Utilities
  • Automated food service
  • Semiconductor fabrication
  • Transportation

ANSI/CTA 709.10 is the latest standard that builds on prior standards for control networking commercialized through the broad-based team that has standardized numerous LON / LonWorks technologies. These technologies are widely adopted with an installed base of millions of commercial and industrial systems.
