Renesas Named A Finalist in Two Categories: Ultimate Products Power and Energy Technology

April 3, 2013

Santa Clara, Calif., (April 3, 2013) – Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced it has been named a finalist in two categories of UBM Tech’s EE Times and EDN Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards (http://ubm-ace.com). Renesas’ RAA20770X Series of mini-POL converters is a finalist in the Ultimate Products – Power category, and the Future Electronics’ Harvesting Platform featuring Renesas’ RL78 microcontroller (MCU) is a finalist in the Energy Technology Award category.

Renesas’ high-efficiency mini-POL converter in a wafer-level chip size (2.7mm X 3.4mm) package delivers reductions in size and thermal resistance for the industry's highest level of miniaturization and power density.

Future Electronics’ Harvesting Platform featuring Renesas’ RL78 MCU is a modular development tool allowing designers tools to evaluate energy harvesting use in their systems. The backbone of the platform is the Renesas RL78, a low-power MCU featuring a 16-bit CISC core running at 32 MHz (at 60uA/MHz).

“Renesas is honored to be selected as a finalist in both the Ultimate Products – Power and Energy Technology Award categories,” said Peter Carbone, Vice President of Marketing, Renesas Electronics America. “Reducing power consumption is a key goal when developing new products and solutions for our customers.”

“We at Future Electronics believe that our Energy Harvesting Platform will reduce time to market and design costs for companies working to develop renewable energy designs, said Todd Baker, Regional Technical Director, Future Electronics. “It is our hope that this tool will spur the market for energy harvesting designs and expand the number of applications utilizing this technology.”

The Ultimate Products of the Year Award – awarded to the most significant product introduced in the last 12 months in 11 categories - is determined by large-scale peer review. The Energy Technology Award recognizes companies that make the biggest contribution to the shift from information to energy technology, a trend that will help sustain and expand many industry sectors to conserve or create new energy sources. Finalists in each category are chosen by expert editors from both EE Times and EDN with accompanying editorial reviews.

EE Times and EDN ACE Awards are presented in 22 categories and are judged by a blue-ribbon panel of industry experts, comprised of the leading voices of academia and the industry. The judges will choose winners in seven categories. Winners in the additional 15 categories are either peer-to-peer or editorially selected.

“Our contest showcases the unique best of breed products that have been brought to the market this year,” said Patrick Mannion, Brand Director, EDN. “The 2013 finalists represent the execution of forward-thinking technologies and creativity that captures the imagination of consumers, illustrating the influence that electronics and embedded design professionals have on today’s culture.”

The Annual Creativity in Electronics (ACE) Awards celebrates the creators of technology who demonstrate leadership and innovation in the global industry and shape the world we live in. These creators, and their innovations, will be recognized at the EE Times and EDN ACE Awards ceremony on April 23, 2013, as part of UBM Tech’s DESIGN West and ESC Silicon Valley Conference.
