Introducing the Renesas Synergy S5D3 micro-controller, a member of the High-Integration S5 Series of Synergy MCUs. The S5D3 MCU group offers performance up to 120 megahertz using the Arm Cortex M4 core. The S5D3 comes equipped with 512 kilobytes of on-chip flash, 256 kilobytes of RAM, and integrated security functions to meet the demands of high performance connected IOT applications.
The 5D3 contains an advanced security engine that can be used to accelerate algorithms that encrypt data and verify authenticity and identity such as RSA, ECC, AES, SHA, and others. It also provides multiple memory protection units that enable partitioning device memory to enhance security, a true random number generator, and the ability to securely store a device identity.
The S5D3 MCU also combines excellent power consumption in active mode with multiple low-power standby modes, making it an ideal solution for cost-sensitive, low-power IOT sensor monitoring applications in areas such as building an industrial automation, USP/CAN connectivity, electricity metering, and white goods.
The high level of functional integration in the S5D3 lets users reduce the overall system component count, thereby reducing BOM cost and overall board size. The S5D3 offers a wide range of communication interfaces including a USB 2.0 compliant full-speed interface, supporting Host and Device class connections, two CAN channels, two dedicated MultiMaster I2C channels, two high-speed SPI channels, QSPI and SDHI interfaces, a Serial Sound Interface, and seven flexible SCI channels that can be configured to operate as UARTs, SPI, I2C, and more.
For safety concerns, the S5D3 offers a range of embedded peripherals that simplify safety compliant designs, including SRAM parity and ECC protection, Clock accuracy check, CRC calculation unit, Flash area protection, ADC self-test function, and an independent watchdog timer with dedicated on-chip oscillator. The eight channels of DMA on the S5D3, combined with a Data Transfer Controller, ensure high performance and maximum flexibility for data transfers. A 12-channel Capacitive Touch Sensing Unit is also included to simplify HMI design. The S5D3 also offers two independent 12-bit A-to-D converters up to a total of 19 channels. Additional analog functions include a 12-bit DAC with two channels, a high-speed analog comparator with six channels, and a Programmable Gain Amplifier or PGA with six channels. The integrated PGA and comparator makes the S5D3 a good fit for motor control applications.
The Renesas Synergy Software Package or SSP supports the S5D3 MCUs with HAL drivers, application frameworks, RTOS, and middleware components for TCP/IP networking, USB communication, file systems, and more. The entire SSP suite is fully tested, maintained, and supported by Renesas. Embedded system designers can use either of the Renesas Synergy development environments, e2 Studio or IAR Embedded Workbench, to build and customize their designs.
