Renesas Highlights USB Power Delivery Controller Design, USB 3.0 Technology in SuperSpeed USB Community, Booth #379

September 9, 2013

Santa Clara, Calif., September 9, 2013 — Renesas Electronics America, a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, will showcase its Universal Serial Bus (USB) expertise at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), September 10-12 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. USB solutions will be displayed and demonstrated in the SuperSpeed USB Community in booth #379. Renesas continues to develop and collaborate with the USB-IF community on USB standardization and to promote mainstream adoption throughout the industry.

Power Delivery Controller Design

At IDF 2013, Renesas will conduct the first demonstration of a working power source and power sink based on the USB Power Delivery Specification Rev 1.0, announced by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) in July 2012. The USB Power Delivery Specification Rev 1.0 enables optimized power management for multiple peripherals, and intelligent and flexible system-level power management. In addition, it extends the capability of the ubiquitous charging through a USB cable to the newer classes and more powerful mobile devices like tablets.

New USB 3.0 Hub Controller (uPD720211)

In addition, today Renesas announced a new dual-port USB 3.0 Hub Controller (uPD720211) with industry-leading low-power and small package size, designed to meet industry demand for more compact and power efficient hub controllers. Based on the USB 3.0 standard, this new dual-port hub controller enables designers to increase the number of port outputs needed on mobile devices and digital TVs and delivers 10 times the previous maximum transfer rate.

Leadership in USB

As a member of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) since 1996, Renesas Electronics (formerly NEC Electronics) has played a leading role both in defining USB standards and in developing USB technology. In April 2000, the company (then NEC Electronics) launched the uPD720100 (the world's first USB 2.0-compliant host controller chip), the uPD720110, (the world's first USB 2.0-compliant hub controller chip) and an extensive lineup of other USB devices, and has earned a reputation for delivering dedicated customer service and high quality.

In May 2009, Renesas Electronics (then NEC Electronics) introduced the industry's first USB 3.0 xHCI host controller and, only after four months of its release, the company became the world's first to earn the “Certified SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0)” certification from the USB-IF, and also started mass production of the uPD720200 host controller. Renesas contributed to the USB-IF certification tests, providing the organization with the host controller products as the platform for other USB 3.0 device certification.
