Hello, my name is Chance Dunlap and I'm here today at APEC 2013 showcasing the latest products from Intersil’s Zilker Labs on our digital power conversion. With this setup today, what we're showing is, on the far left is just our dongle. This is converting our USB interface to PMBus or I2C and with this we're talking to each one of our different power supplies.
So, on the left, on the top right corner of this red board, is a ZL8101 power supply. This is a full 30A stage here with IC, DrMOS conductor and capacitors. And right away, you can see one of the key benefits of digital power is you achieve an extremely dense power supply. With high efficiently and high levels in integration, you can achieve a very small footprint on your boards.
The board here, on the right, in blue, this is just an IC or an entire module ZL9117M. Encapsulated in this device is the inductor, the ICs, the FETs, drivers and all the associated passes. The only remaining parts you need to complete the power supply are just the few input and output capacitors that are shown. So once again, with the high level of integration, you can keep a very small footprint on your board for the power supply.
Along with these products, we have them configured to be using the brand new Power Navigator GUI. This GUI, as shown in the screen, replaces the old system, and now, at your fingertips, you can configure and monitor the entire power supply with all the options, only a single click away. So, in this setup, you can see, we're running from a 12V input on both supplies. On the left, we have the ZL8101, running with a 1.0V output and the ZL9117M running at a 1.2V output.
With digital power and the GUI, the entire system can be programmed to set up sequence and control, depending on what you like. For instance, the sequencing function for the two power supplies can now be done graphically with simple drag and drop commands. So, for instance, changing the soft start timing just involves grabbing which bar you want and sliding it. If you want to change the sequencing order, all you need to do is grab and change the locations on the GUI and you've instantly changed the sequencing of the entire power supply.
In conclusion, with the new digital power devices, you can set up, configure and monitor your power supplies and architect an entire system in a matter of hours, which used to take weeks, using an analog control schemes.
