Renesas has developed a complete portfolio of rad-tolerant plastic parts geared towards multiple applications, including power management, sensor interface, and serial communications for small satellites. These ICs deliver high quality and rad-tolerance at a lower cost point.
Typically when you're using a radiation hardened product, you're using it in a mission that tends to be over 15 years in length and also in a higher orbit where the radiation environment tends to be more harsh. For missions that are shorter in life and are lower in orbit, the radiation-tolerant plastic products are a good fit.
Renesas' cost effective radiation tolerant plastic ICs overcome the reliability issues and hidden costs of commercial off-the-shelf ICs, giving satellite manufacturers the confidence and mission success assurance to launch and operate mega-constellations.
On the qualification side of things, we do an AEC-Q100 like qualification. For example, for new technologies we do a life test or burning up to 2,000 hours, temperature-cycling up to 500 cycles, and moisture sensitivity testing.
Renesas' rad-tolerant plastic packaging flow is intended to aid in our customers' new LEO-focused missions. The flow leverages the experience from the Intersil High Reliability group's more than 50 years of space flight experience developing rad hard and rad-tolerant products for extremely harsh environments.
