Renesas’ Lineup of Smart Grid Solutions Revealed at Booth #311
21 Jun 2016
SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 21, 2016 — Renesas Electronics America Inc., a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, will explore innovative smart energy solutions at Grid Edge World Forum this week at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, Calif. As more devices become interconnected and processing capabilities move out to the edge, smart meter and other energy equipment manufacturers face new challenges around high-precision data, connectivity, and security.
Renesas Electronics America is sharing its embedded design expertise and perspectives on the state of Smart Grid during the show. Attendees will explore emerging technologies for low-voltage grid architectures in the control center and in the field with Renesas and other panelists during the conference sessions. Visitors at Renesas booth #311 will see the smart grid solutions in action and learn more about Renesas’ ongoing innovation to enable the next generation of IoT applications for the grid.
Peter Knazko, Segment Manager of Smart Grid and Metrology, Renesas Electronics America, will join smart grid and technology experts from Landis + Gyr Americas, Gridco, and GTM Research to discuss emerging technologies and distribution management platforms in the panel, “The Device-Enabled Grid: Accommodating New Hardware at the Grid Edge”.
- When: Tuesday,June 21, 4:30 – 5:15 PM
- Where: Grid Edge Media Center
At its booth #311, Renesas Electronics America will also showcase several innovative smart energy solutions that address three key elements of designing for the grid edge:
Metrology is the science of measurement, and Renesas has designed into its evaluation systems accuracies of better than +/- 0.1% and a dynamic range of over 6600:1, with the possibility to use either shunt-based sensing, or the more traditional current- and power-transformer-based methods.
At Grid Edge World, Renesas will demonstrate two solutions that make it easier for smart meter manufacturers to create, customize, and bring to market the types of high-precision smart meters that drive smart homes: a 3-phase, 4-wire smart electricity meter reference design and an ultra-low-power digital flow meter.
Renesas, as a founding member of the Wi-SUN Alliance, will demonstrate its reliable smart meter connectivity solution for the Smart Grid. The “SUN” in Wi-SUN stands for Smart Utility Network, and supports point-to-point communication up to 2.5 miles.
Renesas is also a leader in Powerline Communications (PLC) with three generations of OFDM PLC modem solutions, offering an efficient and cost-effective system using the electric supply network as a communication network. PLC is becoming increasingly popular for the deployment of smart grids, smart meters, and HEMS (Home Energy Management Systems). The Renesas solution supports both the G3 and PRIME standards and was chosen by the G3-PLC alliance as G3 golden unit allowing manufacturers to comply with this standard and to assure interoperability.
Whatever the system and connectivity standard, protecting high-precision data is mission critical, and there are multiple levels of security to choose from. The demonstrations will highlight AES-based encryption and anti-tampering features to prevent the manipulation of smart meter sensing and provide peace of mind for metering manufacturers bringing their next-generation devices online.
