Visit Booth #835 at SID 2011 for Highlights on 3D, Touch, On-Cell and LED Backlighting Technologies

May 17, 2011

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 17, 2011 — NEC LCD Technologies (NLT), Ltd., together with Renesas Electronics America Inc., its sales and marketing channel in the Americas, today introduced two new transflective color thin film transistor (TFT) LCD modules for industrial applications and applications requiring indoor and outdoor viewability. The display modules, 6.5-inch SVGA (800 x 600) (part number NL8060BC16-01) and 10.4-inch XGA (1024 x 768) (part number NL10276BC20-10), incorporate NLT's proprietary super-reflective natural light TFT (SR-NLT) technology resulting in displays operable in both transmissive mode (using a backlight) and reflective mode (using available ambient light). The displays are targeted for use in portable medical systems used in the field and in a hospital or clinic setting, in industrial equipment and in other indoor/outdoor display applications. Both the 6.5-inch and 10.4-inch modules will be on display in Renesas Electronics America's booth (#835) at Society of Information Display (SID) 2011 in the Los Angeles Convention Center, May 17-19.

NEC LCD Technologies' proprietary SR-NLT technology enhances LCD viewability in outdoor lighting environments. In the reflective mode, the display module capitalizes on NEC’s optimized LCD panel design to provide excellent visibility, even in outdoor daylight conditions. The displays also incorporate an eco-friendly LED backlight system that results in lower power consumption. Since images on the display are readable when the backlight is turned off, power consumption can be further reduced.

"While NLT has historically used its SR-NLT technology in a variety of small-size LCDs (4.X-inch and below), the new 6.5-inch and the 10.4-inch modules are the first mid- and large-size SR-NLT LCD modules to go to mass production," said Dr. Shigehiko Satoh, Vice President, Display Business Unit, Renesas Electronics America. "These products, featuring an LED backlight system, a 35 percent reflection ratio and a 15:1 contrast ratio when the backlight is turned off, offer customers a display that is viewable in both high- and low-ambient light environments."
