Compatibility with existing Renesas products |
The RX family represents a huge upgrade in functionality from existing Renesas MCUs, yet it achieves compatibility with existing devices in our H8S, H8SX, M16C, and R32C families. For example, for endian data access, the RX CPU architecture allows a choice between the big- and little-endian formats. The new RX MCUs support endian format conversion instructions so system designs can inherit data formats, aiding the reuse of existing code. To ease the transfer of peripheral functions from existing MCUs, Renesas has used a platform technology that was refined in the implementation of the EXREAL Platform, applying it to create a powerful and flexible new chip development support product: the MCU Development Platform (see Figure 3-1, below). It treats those functions as IP and turns them into assets. The platform's operational approach also facilitates the development of on-chip functions and eases the process of adding functions to chip designs. The greater design efficiency enabled by the capabilities of the MCU Development Platform shortens the time required to develop new RX MCUs. Also, by eliminating key differences between individual products, the platform facilitates feature migrations between product groups. Fig. 3-1.
