Firms that are building modern electronic products confront a wide range of issues, including cost-competition, reduced time to market, rapid globalization, and diverse requirements that include the need for network support, enhanced security and improved energy efficiency. Moreover, such pressures are likely to become more severe as time goes on.

The keys to resolving these and other issues are embedded systems and microcomputers, which are our main areas of focus at Renesas. We believe that there is an essential need for feature and performance enhancements in devices in the middle range of the microcomputer category.

Creating dramatic improvements in microcomputer performance and system development efficiency

Because we have developed our new RX microcomputer product line to directly address and resolve the system-design challenges customers face, Renesas is confident about the success of this architecture and therefore of our future. When we established the RX target specifications, we wanted to ensure that these new middle-range solutions would have capabilities sufficient for not just for present-day designs, but also for the needs anticipated in the next 10 to 20 years. This objective has been accomplished and our R&D activities continue.

RX chips deliver overwhelming core performance with improved code efficiency, and boast a 200MHz operating frequency. They achieve high-speed processing performance in combination with with a large internal flash memory capacity (up to 4MB) that supports single-cycle access at 100MHz. Their on-chip peripheral functions support a diverse range of application requirements. Additionally, RX chips incorporate circuit-design and semiconductor-process innovations that minimize leak current, reducing the devices’ consumption to a low 0.03mA/MHz.

In concept and execution, our expanding range of RX microcomputers represents a next-generation series of system solutions that transcends its era. These devices are bringing a multitude of advantages and benefits to customers around the globe.

Offering not only new dimensions in performance, but also greater ease of use

To facilitate the efforts of engineers in many different markets to upgrade existing embedded-system products and create new ones, Renesas has made RX microcomputers easier to apply. Moreover, we have worked internally and with our microcomputer partners to assure the availability of a comprehensive set of support tools.

This issue of EDGE magazine aims to further encourage transitions to this exciting product line by highlighting and explaining the architecture’s most important problem-solving aspects, as well as by revealing its technology roadmap and future evolution. Two stories describe key product groups: the RX62T group with enhanced motor control functions, and the RX621 and RX62N groups with enhanced connectivity capabilities. Other feature articles cover RX hardware/software tools and their use. We begin our coverage, though, with a forecast article by industry experts at iSuppli, who provide updated insights into the economic status of markets relevant to the RX product line.
