The GUIs (graphical user interfaces) and display functions now incorporated into various electronic devices are poised for dramatic transformations. Types of products that previously were just "viewed" and "operated" will transition to exciting new models you can "feel" and "respond to emotionally." Visual graphics will become increasingly, amazingly realistic, thanks to higher-resolution displays and advanced Renesas microcomputers with enhanced functionality and greater processing power. Watch for creatively applied innovative embedded-system designs that better communicate and interact with users by providing greater sensory impacts.

In today's car navigation products, mobile phones, and other such devices, features like high-quality displays and sophisticated 3D graphics are hugely important because they can be persuasive sales points. Therefore, Renesas anticipates that the graphics processing technologies fostered by this trend will reach new plateaus of reality in applications such as the graphics dashboards of the cars of the future, for instance.

Moreover, the sensory GUIs that first blossomed in game consoles and smart phones, in which touch panels provide easy and entertaining user experiences, have suddenly started to appear in many other types of products, ranging from consumer and office devices to industrial equipment. Advanced functions that use image recognition to support or substitute for human operation are also entering practical use. Familiar capabilities include technology that supports safe driving by using image sensors to monitor road markings and obstacles, and digital cameras that take improved photographs by automatically snapping shots when the sensor electronics detects that the subject is smiling.

Renesas aims to encourage and enable our customers to enhance existing GUIs and graphic display functions that provide realistic sensory experiences, as well as to facilitate the invention of new ones. Additionally, we are helping to migrate these technologies beyond current applications so they can become essential components for adding value in a vast span of products. To that end, the 10 stories in the Special Feature section of this magazine focus on graphics-related aspects of our latest microcomputers and suggest ways that system engineers can implement the best possible GUIs and graphic displays. Other stories in EDGE Volume 24 cover software development issues and technical advances in intelligent transport systems.
