Data communication networks implemented in personal computers and mobile phones have become an integral part of daily life. They are making our lifestyles incomparably more convenient than in the past in many ways - to the extent that they have become a necessity in today's world. Moreover, networks have facilitated the birth of many new businesses, products and services, and have been a major driver behind advances in electronic equipment for a vast span of activities and markets worldwide.
A particularly interesting aspect of the progress in networking technology and applications is that all sorts of items used in the home - lighting fixtures, water heaters, home appliances, environmental sensors, ventilation fans, security sensors, electrical panel switches, etc. - can now be networked. This is making possible developments such as centralized management and intelligent control, the results of which may make significant positive contributions to the welfare of our global environment.
Extensions of home networks that link them to external communication infrastructures will provide multiple benefits in terms of convenience and safety. For example, investigations have begun into the potential for using home networks to distribute public safety advisories in advance of emergencies such as typhoons and to collect data on the condition of structures after disasters such as earthquakes and fires. Such valuable applications will make home networks integral parts of the basic fabric of society.
Advanced semiconductor devices are key enabling factors in the construction and implementation of all types of data networks. Chips with small size, low power consumption, and cost reductions allow communication and control capabilities to be added to many products that previously could not be networked.
Renesas takes a leading role in the development and manufacture of these critical components. We put a strong focus on the requisite technologies and can design and produce in volume reliable microcomputers and other chips that meet various networking standards and the evolving requirements of embedded systems.
It's a source of corporate pride that our networking solutions are helping to link lifestyles and society. This Special Feature section of EDGE magazine introduces total solutions covering not just our semiconductor devices, but also the modules, development tools, and other resources that we and our technology partners offer. These solutions meet the needs of customers designing products with networking capabilities, as well customers creating the equipment it takes to construct all types of networks. Other articles in this magazine describe more ways that Renesas contributes to technology that improves the lives of people around the globe.
