Our contributions to automotive technology enable customers in global markets to improve the safety and convenience of the cars and trucks they build, much to the benefit of everyone who uses the vehicles.

Vehicles today are using more electronics to cope with the diversfying requirements of drivers and passengers and to address concerns about the environment and fuel consumption. Also, the control of various vehicle systems is becoming increasingly complex and diverse. These systems include the powertrain systems that control the engine and transmission, and the body systems that control features such as electrically operated seats and the opening and closing of doors and windows. They also encompass chassis systems (electric power steering, for example), safety systems (airbags and more), and information systems (navigation and audio/visual equipment).

Essential factors in this increased use of electronics in vehicles include electronic control units (ECUs) and automotive semiconductors linked together by in-vehicle networks, particularly the fine-grained control enabled by microcomputers. It is inevitable that the performance of microcomputers will continue to improve and that ECUs will become increasingly sophisticated and integrated.

Various factors are important for meeting the needs of the automotive industry. To be successful, a semiconductor manufacturer must offer excellent technologies for high-speed processing, miniaturization and low power consumption. It also has to have extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of real-time closed-loop control systems and information-processing systems. Further, the company must be able to ensure a reliable supply of a wide range of products to match the long product lives of automobiles. Renesas' comprehensive strengths in areas such as design and process technology, product development, and manufacturing are making us ever more competitive in markets around the world.

 

Support for high-speed in-vehicle networks is essential feature for increasing the integration of ECUs into new vehicles. Component technologies and software standardization that is improving system development efficiency are also becoming increasingly important in vehicles as electronics become more capable and pervasive. Renesas has participated in a wide range of standardization activities from an early stage and we are contributing to the establishment of technical standards, development platforms, and similar resources.
