Application Processor for Mobile Phones
Device incorporates high-performance graphics engine for recording and playback of VGA-resolution movies

The SH-Mobile L3V application processor (product name: SH7354) is optimized for use in mobile phones that support one-segment broadcasting. This high-end model in the SH-Mobile series uses the SH4AL-DSP CPU core and achieves 389MIPS performance at an operating frequency of 216MHz.

Included on the chip is the VPU4 (Video Processing Unit 4) high-performance graphics processing IP. The IP supports the H.264 standard used in one-segment broadcasting and the MPEG-4 standard used in video-mail and movies. It can encode and decode VGA-resolution video at 30fps. Other broadcast standards are supported as well, including DVB-H used in Europe and DMB used in South Korea.

Additional functions integrated into the SH-Mobile L3V application processor are a camera interface that can connect directly to a 5Mpixel-class camera module, a 24-bit LCD interface that supports the display of 16,780,000 colors, and an image-quality correction function.

Series of LSI Devices for TV Systems
Nine new chips perform various functions and help reduce the overall cost of TV equipment.

Bottom: HDMI (left), Video/audio interface (right)

A new range of nine TV-system LSI devices is part of a development solution for TV systems used around the world. There are three models of LSIs for LCD TVs. Two of them will be available in September 2006 and the other in October 2006. Two models of analog broadcast decoder LSIs will be available in September 2006, as will two models of video/audio interface LSIs. An HDMI digital-receiver LSI will be available in October 2006. The other product, a digital broadcast decoder LSI for LCD TVs, will be available in November 2006.

The new LSI chips support the diverse functional requirements of the TV systems used in different countries. They are designed to help improve system development efficiency and lower system cost.

Tiny Varicap Diodes for Tunable Antennas
Diodes' small size aids the design of internal antennas in products that support one-segment broadcasts.

Two new varicap diodes are designed for use with the tunable antennas used in mobile phones and other portable devices that support one-segment broadcasting. One of them, the RKV653KP chip version, measures only 0.6mm x 0.3mm and is the smallest in the industry. The other, the RKV653KL package version, has lead terminals and comes in a 1.0mm (0.8mm body size) x 0.6mm EFP (extremely small flat lead package, Renesas profile code). Because both of these varicap diodes are very small and allow a wide range of frequency bands to be received, they can be used to replace external antennas with internal ones. This allows wireless products to be made more compact and convenient.

The varicap diodes achieve an industry-best variable capacitance ratio of 2.7 (for C1/C3) at a low voltage of around 3V. This performance delivers the low voltage operation and wide bandwidth needed for tunable antennas.
