Overview
A POL (Point Of Load) converter is a step-down DC-DC converter positioned close to a processor which consumes power. POL converters are used in many power supply systems. They offer the advantage that by placing the final-stage power supply (POL) near to the load, it is possible to eliminate the long wiring between power supply and load found in conventional power supply systems. This enables a precise voltage supply while meeting low-voltage and large-current requirements.
In addition, the power supply impedance is reduced, which in turn minimizes the interference between different voltages and unwanted electromagnetic radiation. The power supplies of large servers consist of three main sections; a block which converts external AC into DC; a block which boosts the power efficiency, and a POL block. The POL converts the DC (12 V, 24 V, or 48 V) distributed to each PCB to the voltage required by each individual circuit block in the system.
Renesas offers an extensive flexible lineup of solutions for POL applications, including implementations of pulse width modulation (PWM) controllers and switching devices in SiP (system in package), and discrete products.
