Overview
LCD direct drive refers to a system which utilizes a microcontroller to replace an LCD controller for the display of images on an LCD. This makes it possible to develop low cost products equipped with an LCD panel for home or commercial applications.
Renesas Electronics provides solutions covering the entire system, with support for JPEG compression and decompression, FAT file system middleware, and wireless LAN modules. LCD panel resolutions up to VGA are supported, and a simple control panel can be implemented by using a touch panel in conjunction.
Renesas’ MCUs such as the H8S/2456 Group, H8SX/1668R Group, and RX62N Group incorporate an EXDMAC that enables the CPU to perform control and processing simultaneously with the transfer of image data to an LCD panel. Using the EXDMAC allows the internal and external buses to operate independently, so an LCD panel can be controlled without the need for an LCD controller.
