The µPD78F8058microcontroller is a 16-bit microcontroller with a built-in 2.4 GHz IEEE802.15.4 RF transceiver circuit. It is compliant with the international ZigBee® RF4CE standard for home RF remote controllers.
RF remote controllers are increasingly replacing conventional infrared remote controllers, because they meet the modern demands for multi-system functionality (such as televisions and Blu-ray Disc players).
RF remote controllers offer several advantages, including the use of non-directional signals between audiovisual devices and the controller; the ability to use responses and information from devices supporting bidirectional communication from the remote controller; and built-in security features. These advantages enable new feature ideas to be created, and are the reason for the increasing popularity of RF remotes.

The µPD78F8058 microcontroller includes the following features:

  • Global top-class low power consumption
  • Ability to write and erase flash memory at 1.8 V
  • Full-featured development environment (About RF4CE SDK)

Unlike previous products, which only had an externally mounted RF transceiver circuit, this circuit is built into the µPD78F8058. This makes it highly effective at helping to reduce the number of components in the system, mounting area, and cost.
