Overview
Electric screwdrivers are becoming more compact and portable cordless battery-charged models are becoming mainstream. Brushless DC (direct current) motors are increasingly being used to meet these demands. Since a brushless DC motor does not have to worry about brush wear, the motor can have a longer lifespan and is capable of highly precise rotation control. Moreover, brushless DC motors are also highly efficient and economical. Since there is little electrical loss, little heat is generated, making brushless DC motors well suited for continuous operation. More compact device size is another advantage. Renesas offers digitally controlled microcontroller power supplies for charger control meeting a variety of battery specifications. They are optimal for use in the battery charger unit.
The Renesas R8C Family and RL78/G14 microcontrollers are suitable for use in motor control applications in electric screwdrivers. These microcontrollers feature low power consumption, which makes possible increased energy savings and more compact electric screwdrivers, contributing to longer battery life and making them an eco-friendly solution. Renesas also offers comprehensive solutions for electric drivers in the form of the R8C/3x Series, which is suitable as the microcontroller for the charger, and highly efficient power MOSFETs for motor drive inverter and charger control.
