Overview
BD (Blu-ray Disc) / DVD recorders have grown rapidly in popularity due to increasing availability of digital services and high definition digital media content. The recording media are BD-RE/R and DVD-R optical discs and built-in hard disk drives. In addition, recorders and TVs from the same manufacturer now often include the CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) function linking operations such as power on/off, program settings for recording and changing input selections. Some products also include the ability to retrieve program information via the Internet, or to perform bidirectional data communications.
A BD/DVD recorder must provide high-quality, extended-duration recording capabilities while supporting lower power operation as an eco-friendly home electronics device.
Renesas supplies a variety of solutions optimized for the development requirements of BD/DVD recorders. The R8C/3MQ and μPD78F8058 ZigBee RF4CE microcontrollers (MCUs) support bidirectional communication and non-directionality, SH7619, SH7651, SH7652, and V850ES/Jx3-E MCUs provide Ethernet connectivity and the 78K0R/Kx3-C and other MCUs can implement CEC control. These can all serve as replacements for conventional infrared MCUs. In addition to AV interfaces with high level integration of electronic volume, Renesas offer a variety of devices supporting link connections and network connectivity for CEC.
